The Red Scare

1. Connect the Ordinary World and the Call to Adventure to your reading of Book 1 of The Metamorphosis. Explain the connection.

The ordinary world made up of two parts: work and home life. He wasn't very exuberant about either. His job was stressful, and his home life and family were boring. His transformation into the bug was his call to adventure. He transformed because, one night, after thinking about how unsatisfying his life was, he realized that he needed some sort of adventure in his life.

2. Are there any social issues being critiqued in the story? How does "The Red Scare" relate to Kafka's work?

Kafka's Metamorphosis was a social critique on the treatment of workers during a time of change and industrialization. Gregor worked hard to no avail, because he had to pay back his boss with the money that he earned. Like Gregor, Americans during the red scare mindlessly followed authority figures, like McCarthy/ the boss. That is until they sat down and thought about what they were being told, or if they listened to other points of view like Edward Merrow's (sp.)/unions.

3. What does Gregor turn into in the story?

He turns into a beetle type bug.
